As part of a college first year graded unit, Callum took on the role of Recording Engineer for a multi-track studio production of a traditional Scottish folk band, overseeing the technical process from session preparation to post-production handover.
AIM
The aim of the project was to plan, record, and mix a three-song EP for a traditional Scottish folk band, demonstrating technical competence in studio recording, engineering, and session management while meeting a defined creative brief.
Key Responsibilities
Planned recording sessions, preparing the studio environment, selecting microphones, and designing input lists.
Engineered the tracking process, managing microphone placement, gain staging, and monitoring throughout.
Collaborated closely with the producer and musicians to achieve the desired sonic outcome and maintain session flow.
Organised and labelled session files to ensure a clean and efficient handover for mixing and editing.
Conducted an evaluation of technical and workflow strengths, identifying opportunities for future development.
Outcome
The final deliverable was a three-song EP, recorded and mixed to a professional standard, and prepared for mastering. The project demonstrated Callum’s capability in studio recording techniques, microphone placement, mixing, and session management, while highlighting his ability to work collaboratively within a professional recording environment.
