As part of a college first year graded unit, Callum took on the role of Recording Engineer for a multi-track studio production of a traditional Scottish folk band, overseeing the technical process from session preparation to post-production handover.

AIM

The aim of the project was to plan, record, and mix a three-song EP for a traditional Scottish folk band, demonstrating technical competence in studio recording, engineering, and session management while meeting a defined creative brief.

Key Responsibilities

  • Planned recording sessions, preparing the studio environment, selecting microphones, and designing input lists.

  • Engineered the tracking process, managing microphone placement, gain staging, and monitoring throughout.

  • Collaborated closely with the producer and musicians to achieve the desired sonic outcome and maintain session flow.

  • Organised and labelled session files to ensure a clean and efficient handover for mixing and editing.

  • Conducted an evaluation of technical and workflow strengths, identifying opportunities for future development.

Outcome

The final deliverable was a three-song EP, recorded and mixed to a professional standard, and prepared for mastering. The project demonstrated Callum’s capability in studio recording techniques, microphone placement, mixing, and session management, while highlighting his ability to work collaboratively within a professional recording environment.
